Luis Arguelles
Born in Spain (1959), Luis studied charcoal drawing with maestro Antonio Mendibil before entering the Technical High School of Architecture in Valladolid University. Luis attributes his fascination
and love for black and white photography to his study of the
charcoal medium.
Luis’ father (a Voigtländer Bessamatic user) gave him a second-hand Zeiss-Ikon Contaflex as a gift in his 14th birthday. Feeling naturally timid when trying to photograph people, Luishe spent several years with landscapes, still lifes and some occasional portraits.
A trip to Florence with a rangefinder camera changed it all. Under the influence of the ambience of one of the most magic cities in the world, Luis discovered what had previously eluded him: the fact that the human figure is the very essence of art and, by extension, the essence of photography. Since then, this fundamental concept has been the central, governing factor in Luis’ photographic work.
Luis lives in Oviedo, Spain, with his wife Ana.
